WAIROA RAPID BUG  *Sundays only
$89 (child 10–15years)
$109 (adult)

The Maori name Wairoa means long water. From its' source in Kaimai Ranges the Wairoa River flows west towards Tauranga where it empties into the sea. A history of volcanic activity that poured lava in the riverbed, created a whitewater playground – perfect for riverbugging!

The river section starting from McLaren Falls is well known for it's challenging whitewater rafting. The lower part of this section eases in difficulty, and this is where we run our Wairoa Rapid Bug tours. The river level is controlled by water release from the Lake McLaren dam on 26 Sundays from Spring – Summer, so be sure to book early to reserve your place.

No previous experience is necessary, participants should have a reasonable level of fitness. We carry our bugs (8kg) to and from the river, so be prepared to walk over uneven ground and rocks.

  • No previous experience necessary.
  • All equipment and safety personnel provided.
  • Bring your swimwear, towel & sun protection.
  • Allow approximately 2.5 –3 hours in total.
  • Available on Sundays only
